Due to the natural properties of oak, it is common for timber to exhibit splits, cracks, knots, and other imperfections. These features are not considered defects but are instead natural occurrences that add to the rustic charm and aesthetic appeal of the wood. Over time, environmental factors such as changes in temperature and humidity can also cause further development of splits and cracks.

Green oak or part seasoned oak is called so due to its high water content which is present in all trees before and
after they are felled and dried out. Green oak takes approximately 1 year per inch to dry so a standard oak
beam could take as long as 5 years.
